Loved it! (Make sure you call ahead to book!!)

This place was amazing. So glad we stumbled across it on trip advisor (it’s not highly advertised, but really well reviewed by everyone who’s been there, us included). We literally made the trip to the area just to go see this place and it was totally worth it for such a unique and immersive cultural learning experience. As far as we know, it’s the only living museum of its kind in the PH, but I really hope this model is adopted elsewhere (here, home, and abroad). Such a great way to learn about and preserve a culture. Since they do have to prepare so much in advance, like the carabao and rice planting and the food they serve you (delicious btw), and arranging for the elders to come, so they do need to know you’re coming. Just call or text the number listed here or on Google maps (no need to arrange a ’tour’ - when we were there the going rate was ₽700 ea and totally worth every piso! They do a 10am and 2pm every day except Mondays and they can combine groups. We texted the night before for the 10am and another group called while we were there for the 2pm on the same day and both were fine, so they don’t seem to need a lot of notice, but they won’t be around if they don’t have any bookings (and might not have enough supplies if you pop by and join a group that’s made a booking), so avoid disappointment and take the moment to text/call before you go.

Bonus: we totally ended up tacking on a Boracay daytrip as a side-trip, "since we were in the area." From the reviews we read, most people do it the other way - stay on Boracay and do a daytrip to get away from the beach and crowds. If you’re doing it from Boracay, just hop on any ferry back to Caticlan and get a trike there for your 10am or 2pm booking. The trike drivers all know the way and it shouldn’t take more than about an hour total from the port on Boracay, depending on the ferry you choose. No need to fall for any of the ’all inclusive’ package scams that overcharge. Either arrange for the trike driver to come back and get you in about 2hours or take the lovely walk down to the main road and flag the next one going your way

A very unique experience

We really enjoyed this “museum” tour. It is not a museum in the traditional sense but it is very educational and fun! The purpose of the tour is to teach guests about the traditional lifestyle of the Philippines (before electricity and running water). You are outside the entire time so wear outdoor that you don’t mind getting dirty. The tour is very hands on with lots of doing and tasting and includes a ride on the water buffalo. We planted rice in the paddy and harvested rice, went through a traditional bamboo home, and learned about their faith and traditions. The elders sang us a beautiful song as farewell at the end. This is a family friendly, fun, entertaining and educational experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Motag Living Museum.

Well worth a visit

Highly recommend this place if you are looking to learn more about the Philippine culture. You get to learn about how rice is planted, what the traditional homes were made up of, traditional cooking wares, basket weaving and other interesting activities. The people are genuine and great at explaining everything. Well organized and a unique activity different from your usual beach time and well worth it. Do book ahead of time as the museum is only open when there are bookings and internet is not always reliable so it may take a few days for them to receive your booking if internet is down. The cost of the tour of the museum is 700 pesos per person. Transfer from your hotel is separate, I recommend doing it on your own (the transportation part)way cheaper and not difficult, whatever you do, do not book through random tours on the beach (especially through a long haired guy named John who claims he is a licensed tour guide-he has a board with different tours on it at the beach by the big chicken restaurant-avoid him as he will rip you off as he did with us).So either book the transfer through the museum or do it on your own. If on your own: take tricycle to Cagban Jetty Port (main boat area), then a boat to Malay and then another tricycle ride (the drivers know where it is)to Motag museum, the whole ride from Boracay to the museum is about 1-1.5 hours max (traffic dependent).
We thoroughly enjoyed it despite a bad experience with John the tour guide (not part of motag living museum).

Amazing experience!

My tour group enjoyed every minute of our time at Motag. Very interesting and a great insight into how they lived in the past. Loved tasting the coconut and treats.
Thank you for a great day, I will return with another group in 2020.

experience our way of living

We were their first guests since the island reopened so we had the whole place to ourselves. We took the boat back to Caticlan and took a 15 minute tricycle ride from the port to the museum. Our tour guide Amy gave us a warm welcome and the tour was great! We learned so much about how our ancestors lived and got to experience it first hand. Our favorites were getting to do a carabao ride and also planting rice, shucking and making popcorn with the rice called “pinipig”! The elders and staff sang a sweet song in their local language and then fed us some yummy native treats! If you are looking for something different to do, this will be a great experience for you and your family!
