About us

Downtown CafΓ© is the more causal Filipino restaurant of Bale Dutung, with a 1950s panciteria setting. It’s our take on our much loved Filipino classics, as well as some favorites from Bale Dutung’s menu.

Glad this excellent cafe was open

We went on a road trip to Angeles City and wanted to dine at Chef Claude Tayag's Bale Dutung. Sadly, it was closed because of the pandemic. We were so hospitably referred instead to the Chef's Downtown Cafe. Texted for a reservation and it was quickly answered and very pleasantly by Mae. Choices were not complete but understandably so. Just glad they were open during these very hard times. The short menu was nevertheless salivating and Mae helped a lot on the choices. There were three of us and thought we over-ordered. Not true; we finished 'em all. The kare-kare with it's gelatinous and well-aged oxtail was unique and did not stand a chance against 3 hungry travellers. The pork "cheeks," suggested by Mae as substitute for the unavailable Bagnetta, was sinful but we were prepared to sin that day and it was worth it. With respect to the crablettes on alige rice, we also decided to just do penance for that sin. All-in-all, the al fresco lunch with great food and great cool weather was quite an experience.

Superb food. Superb service.

My friends and family were wondering why this place isn't in Clark or Manila. The quality of food was beyond excellent. We really enjoyed the food. Their leche flan cheesecake was OMG TOO GOOD!! And it's homemade. For all the tourists visiting Pampanga, I strongly recommend this. The service was very good. They are very accommodating and their quality of service is topnotch.

Kapampangan Dishes cooked to perfection

I have always wanted to taste Claude Tayag’s take on Kapampangan dishes but it takes a lot of effort to eat at Bale Dutung. Now am so glad they put up a restaurant at Nepo for walk ins. Finally tried to dine here with a friend and we were not disappointed at all. Sisig is perfection and the paku salad is prepared the proper way. After the first bite of the fern leaves there is no sticky feeling in the mouth, a sure sign that the salad was well prepared. I will definitely come back with my children and balikbayan friends to try other dishes.

Excellent modern Kapampangan cuisine

We still rave the late lunch we had at this unassuming retro diner that serves Kapampangan culinary classics updated by Claude Tayag but still packs a ton of flavor. Don't miss out on the crispy duck, kare-kare, and the memorable halo-halo with pastillas milk.

Best Value Restaurant

Good food and ambiance. Like very much the papaya salad and ensalada pako. Definitely will eat there again to try different dish.

This Is Pampanga Food

I know Kapampangans are known to be good cooks, that seems to be an understatement. My friend treated us for lunch and ordered a bunch of stuff to try, neither of us have ever dined here before. Everything was just ???? perfectly done. I made fun of him because he actually asked for egg for his sisig - to which I said β€œthat’s not how they do it here” All the way to dessert - we ordered Halo Halo and their Flan Cheese Cake... moment of silence because our senses were hit of the right spot. A definite MUST try! All the staff/waitresses were friendly and explained what Kapampangan food is all about. The interior has an old vibe w old Coke posters and bottles an old Juke box etc.

Sinfully good!

We've been here twice because we really love their food. Surprisingly, in both occasions, the cafe is not filled with people. But I noticed that even the other restos nearby barely have customers. Could it be the location? Interior: They have a jukebox that works at P20 per coin. The knick knacks in the resto are very interesting, they bring back a lot of good memories. Food: We enjoyed the pako salad, lumpia, tinapa triangles, bagnetta, gising-gising, aromatic spring duck, sisig, talangka rice. The only dish that we didn't really enjoy was the crispy tilapia with burong hipon. Service: Service is also superb! The servers are well groomed, attentive and very helpful. They even assisted us in coordinating with their other resto, Bale Dutung for a future reservation. Restroom: Unfortunately, they dont have one. You have to go out and use the common CRs in the building, which are not well maintained. Recommendation: This is a must stop over if you are going food tripping in Pampanga. Just make sure to bring with you your hypertension medicine, because their food are sinfully good.
